Styrofoam Recycling: A Sustainable Solution

Why Recycle Styrofoam? Styrofoam, also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS), is a common material used in packaging, insulation, and disposable food containers. Despite its convenience, Styrofoam poses significant environmental challenges due to its non-biodegradable nature. Recycling Styrofoam helps reduce solid waste, conserves resources, and prevents pollution. We are only able to accept and recycle #6 Styrofoam. How do you know what Styrofoam you have? Easy! If you are able to snap the Styrofoam in half when you bend it, we are able to accept it. If the Styrofoam does not break, and only bends, we are unable to accept it.

How is Styrofoam Recycled? The Styrofoam recycling process involves several steps:

  1. Collection: Styrofoam products are collected through drop-offs at our Imperial MO, Park Hills MO, and Kansas City MO Facilities. We are also able to offer pickups for commercial accounts/businesses.

  2. Compaction: The collected Styrofoam is compacted into dense bricks to reduce its volume.

  3. Processing: The compacted Styrofoam is then processed into small pellets.

  4. Recycling: These pellets are used to manufacture new products such as picture frames, interior molding, and office supplies.

Where to Recycle Styrofoam? We can accept Styrofoam for drop-offs at any of our facilities. Please note, fees may apply.

Benefits of Styrofoam Recycling

  • Reduces Landfill Waste: Recycling Styrofoam keeps it out of landfills, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose.

  • Conserves Resources: By recycling, we reduce the need for virgin materials, conserving natural resources.

  • Prevents Pollution: Proper recycling prevents Styrofoam from breaking down into microplastics that can harm wildlife and ecosystems.
